Record Numbers of Americans Are Looking Beyond the US

Sep 5, 2026

More Americans are thinking seriously about their options beyond the United States.

Recent figures show that 1,781 people appeared on the US Treasury’s expatriation list in the second quarter of 2026. Combined with the first quarter, that brings the first-half total to 3,243, putting 2026 on pace to become one of the highest years on record for US expatriation.

The numbers are notable. But at Citizens International, we believe the more relevant trend for most Americans is happening well before anyone considers giving up their US citizenship.

More families are simply asking: what other options could I have?

A Second Citizenship Does Not Mean Leaving America

For most Americans exploring a second citizenship, leaving the United States permanently is not the objective.

Instead, we increasingly see second citizenship considered as part of a broader Plan B: another country where you have the right to live, a potential future home, greater international mobility and an additional option for your family. That distinction is important.

Obtaining a second passport does not require someone to give up their US citizenship or immediately relocate. Many people may never move at all. They simply value having another option available should their circumstances, priorities or plans change in the future.

For some, that means planning for retirement. For others, it means purchasing a second home abroad or creating another place where their children and future generations can live.

Why Americans Are Thinking More Globally

There are many reasons this conversation has become more prominent.

Americans are increasingly internationally mobile, with families, businesses, investments and property spanning multiple countries. At the same time, US citizens living abroad can face additional tax reporting, compliance and banking requirements because the United States taxes its citizens regardless of where they live.

It is important, however, to separate second citizenship from tax planning.

Obtaining Caribbean citizenship does not remove a US citizen’s American tax obligations. Renouncing US citizenship is an entirely separate decision with significant legal and financial considerations.

For the majority of people considering a second citizenship, the opportunity is much broader: creating greater flexibility over where they can live, invest and spend their time in the future.

Why the Caribbean Fits That Conversation

For American families looking for this kind of optionality, the Caribbean has become an increasingly compelling choice.

Citizenship by Investment provides a relatively direct route to second citizenship, but we believe the most attractive opportunities go well beyond obtaining another passport.

Antigua and Barbuda, in particular, offers the ability to combine citizenship with something tangible: property ownership and a genuine connection to a place where you may actually want to spend more time.

For someone already considering a second home, future retirement in the Caribbean or simply spending part of the year somewhere warmer and more relaxed, citizenship can form part of a much broader lifestyle decision.

That is increasingly how we believe second citizenship should be viewed.

Plan B Does Not Mean Plan Exit

Rising US expatriation numbers make headlines, but they represent one end of a much wider conversation.

You do not need to be planning to leave the United States to see the value in having another option. For many families, second citizenship is simply about preparing today for possibilities they may want tomorrow. It can provide another place to live, another home base and greater choice over how and where future generations spend their lives.

And there is another reason to consider those options now. Caribbean Citizenship by Investment programs are under increasing international pressure to evolve. Future frameworks may include greater physical-presence requirements, higher investment thresholds or more selective routes to citizenship.

For those already considering Caribbean citizenship, particularly alongside property ownership, the framework available today provides an opportunity to apply under established requirements while they remain in place.

At Citizens International, we help clients consider citizenship as part of a wider plan for property, residency and life in the Caribbean.

Speak with our team to explore whether Caribbean citizenship could be the right option for you.
