Caribbean News Digital has recently reported on Russian tourism spending, which has seen a major increase of 40% in 2016. Although the actual amount of travellers decreased, the spending increased considerably, meaning that the tourists are individually spending much more. This is good news for high-end tourist destinations, which include many of the luxurious islands in the Caribbean such as Antigua and Barbuda.
The outlook for tourism spending in 2017 is even more promising. The Russian rouble has recovered to almost 60 to the euro, the price of a barrel of oil is back to $50, and Russia’s recession is predicted to end in 2017. Due to these factors, the percentage of Russians who fall within the income bracket who can afford international travel has increased. Russia is a small but growing source market for tourists in the Caribbean and this trend is underpinned by these new statistics from the study by Ipsos ComCon presented recently at the Moscow International Travel and Tourism Exhibition.
