Robert De Niro has been interested in Antigua & Barbuda for quite some time! In 2014 the Prime Minister even appointed him as the special economic envoy of the twin-island nation in the eastern Caribbean.
The appointment came after De Niro signed a memorandum of agreement in 2014 for a US $250 million hotel investment in Barbuda. It was said that De Niro and an Australian businessman James Packer would help renovate and expand a former five-star luxury resort that closed many years ago. However, it took some time for Barbuda to bounce back from hurricane Irma and of course not shortly after the Pandemic hit the entire world. The hotel hasn’t started building, however, De Niro recently opened a NOBU restaurant in Barbuda with a local chef.
PM Gaston Browne expects that De Niro and his investments will attract more investments from American celebrities to Antigua & Barbuda. Since Nobu has opened, there has been a lot of hype, everyone wants to eat there! You can get there by helicopter, private charter, private plane, ferry or local plane.
